De Havilland 94 Moth Minor
The de Havilland Aircraft Company always tried to make their aircraft in line with contemporary concepts.
In 1937 Monoplanes were replacing biplanes. So de Havilland decided that a monoplane primary trainer,of clean design.with two tandem seats, using minimal power, would undoubtedly be successful. So in June,1937, Geoffrey de Havilland took the Moth Minor on it's maiden flight with it's meagre 90 horsepower. It was a success due to the fact that private flying clubs were on the look-out for sleeker aircraft and here they had one,.but only for a short time.
And then came WW2 and after a production run of some 100 Moth Minors the de Havilland factories were pressed into producing pure combat aicraft. All the jigs and blueprints of the Moth Minor and incomplete airframes, were handed over to Sydney,Australia who continued production.Nearly all the Moth Minors produced were pressed into war service,in one form or another.(here it may be said that the US Army Air Corps used the Moth Minor for artillery spotting and a complete airframe still exists in America to this day)
When hostilities ended, the Moth Minor filtered it's way back into private hands and quite a few are still flying today.
In the writers opinion the flight dynamics are very authentic, although it is probably over instrumented, but just the thing for an IFR (I Follow Railways) tour.
The Canadian de Havilland Chipmunk, appears to me,was a direct legacy of the Moth Minor concept.
One question remains. Was the de Havilland 94 Moth Minor the very last of the "Moth" series of production De Havilland aircraft?
And this aircraft, the Moth Minor, begs for an Antipodean livery.
